Volcanic Ash

📚 Source: QRH 7.40~7.42 (D632W001-AAR)

Condition

Volcanic ash is suspected when one or more of these occur:

• Static discharge around the windshield
• Bright glow in the engine inlets
• Smoke or dust on the flight deck
• Acrid odor (매캐한 냄새)

Checklist

1. Exit the volcanic ash as quickly as possible. Consider a 180° turn. Consider a descending turn.
2. Don oxygen masks and smoke goggles, if needed
3. Establish crew communications, if needed
4. Dual Eng Fail/Stall 체크리스트를 지시 전까지 수행하지 말 것
5. 이 체크리스트 수행 중 양 엔진 모두 고장 시:
   • Both FUEL CONTROL switches — CUTOFF, then RUN
   • RAT switch — Push and hold 1 second
6. ENG FAIL 체크리스트도 지시 전까지 수행하지 말 것
7. When in volcanic ash: Minimize thrust if practical (EGT 감소 → 엔진 손상 경감)
8. ENGINE ANTI-ICE selectors (both) — ON
9. WING ANTI-ICE selector — ON
10. RECIRC FANS switches (both) — Off
11. APU selector (if APU available) — START, then ON

화산재로 인한 비정상 시스템 반응

• 엔진 오작동, EGT 상승, 엔진 서지/스톨, Flameout
• 속도 지시 감소 또는 소실
• EQUIP COOLING OVRD 메시지
• FIRE CARGO FWD or AFT 메시지 (허위 경보 가능)

12. 다음 체크리스트 수행 금지: EQUIP COOLING OVRD, ANTI-ICE ON
13. 분기:
    • Both engines failed → Dual Eng Fail/Stall (QRH 7.2)
    • Single engine failed → ENG FAIL L, R (QRH 7.16)
    • Both engines running → Step 14
14. Plan to land at the nearest suitable airport.
