Overview

The B777 uses a fly-by-wire flight control system managed by three Primary Flight Computers (PFC L/C/R). Pilot inputs are transmitted electrically to hydraulic actuators on all primary and secondary flight control surfaces.

Primary Flight Controls

SurfaceActuatorsHydraulic System
Ailerons (L/R)2 eachL + C (outboard), C + R (inboard)
Elevators (L/R)2 eachL + R (outboard), L + C (inboard)
Rudder (Upper/Lower)3 totalL, C, R

Secondary Flight Controls

  • Spoilers: 7 panels per wing (ground and flight spoilers)
  • Flaps: Leading edge slats + trailing edge flaps (powered by Center hydraulic)
  • Horizontal Stabilizer: Electric trim + manual trim wheel

Operating Modes

  • Normal Mode: Full fly-by-wire envelope protection (PFC operational)
  • Secondary Mode: Reduced envelope protection (partial PFC loss)
  • Direct Mode: Direct link between control column and actuators (all PFC lost)
