Overview

The RAT is an emergency power source that deploys into the airstream to provide hydraulic and electrical power when both engines and APU are unavailable. It drives a hydraulic pump connected to the Center hydraulic system.

Key Facts

  • Deploys automatically when both engines lose thrust (N2 below threshold) and APU not running
  • Can be manually deployed via the RAT switch on the overhead panel
  • Provides hydraulic power to Center system (flight controls)
  • Provides emergency electrical power via a hydraulic motor-driven generator
  • Requires minimum airspeed (~130 kts) for adequate power output
