Smoke, Fire or Fumes
Condition: Smoke, fire or fumes occurs. Objective: To remove power from the ignition source. To land the airplane as soon as possible, if needed.
Initial Actions
- Step 1: Don oxygen masks and smoke goggles, if needed.
- Step 2: Establish crew and cabin communications.
- Step 3: (not shown in extract — see full QRH)
- Step 4: IFE/PASS SEATS switch … OFF
- Step 5: RECIRC FANS switches (both) … Off
- Step 6: APU BLEED AIR switch … Off
- Step 7: Any time the smoke or fumes becomes the greatest threat:

Step 8: Source Identification
| Source obvious & can be extinguished | Source NOT obvious or cannot be extinguished |
|---|---|
| Isolate and extinguish the source | → Go to Step 10 |
| If practical, remove power by switch or CB | |
| → Go to Step 9 |
Step 9: After Extinguishing
| Confirmed extinguished & smoke decreasing | NOT confirmed extinguished or smoke continues |
|---|---|
| Continue flight at captain’s discretion | → Go to Step 10 |
| Restore unpowered items at captain’s discretion | |

Steps 10–23: Systematic Isolation (Source Not Found)
- Step 10: Advise cabin — main cabin lighting will be turned off
- Step 11: CABIN/UTILITY switch … OFF
- Step 12: Initiate diversion to nearest suitable airport
- Step 13: Consider immediate landing if situation becomes uncontrollable
- Step 14: Do not delay landing to complete following steps
Left Pack Isolation
- Step 15: C BLEED AIR ISLN switch … Off
- Step 16: L PACK switch … Off
- Step 17: L TRIM AIR switch … Off
- Step 18: Do not accomplish: PACK L, TRIM AIR L
- Step 19: Wait 2 minutes (unless smoke/fumes increasing)
Step 20: First Decision Point
| Smoke/fumes continue or increasing | Smoke/fumes decreasing |

| L PACK → AUTO | → QRH-Smoke-Fumes-Removal if needed ■ ■ ■ ■ |
| L TRIM AIR → ON | |
| R PACK → Off | |
| R TRIM AIR → Off → Go to Step 21 |
Right Pack Isolation
- Step 21: Do not accomplish: PACK R, TRIM AIR R
- Step 22: Wait 2 minutes (unless smoke/fumes increasing)
Step 23: Final Decision
| Smoke/fumes continue or increasing | Smoke/fumes decreasing |
|---|---|
| C BLEED AIR ISLN → AUTO | → QRH-Smoke-Fumes-Removal if needed ■ ■ ■ ■ |
| R PACK → AUTO | |
| R TRIM AIR → ON | |
| Consider immediate landing |

Notes & Gotchas
WARNING
Step 13-14: Do NOT delay landing to complete the pack isolation steps. The checklist is designed so you can stop at any point and land.
- This is a systematic pack-by-pack isolation procedure (Left → Right → Center)
- Each 2-minute wait is to observe whether the smoke source has been isolated
- If no improvement after isolating both packs, the source is likely NOT air conditioning related
